| Reiki Symbols To say there is a bit of controversy in revealing Reiki symbols is an understatement. Diane Stein was the first to publish the four Usui symbols given during instruction, and she was soon confronted by angry fellow Reiki Masters who could not believe a true and serious Master would reveal such secret information. Since the taboo was broken though, as was inevitable, the symbols have been reprinted by various authors with some variations. Since that first printing in the mid 90s, a number of authors and teachers have created or channelled new symbols not originally part of the Usui system. Expectantly or not, these new symbols appeared to all who used them to effectively shift energy of the user and recipient. Of course, many practitioners strongly adhere to the more traditional teachings of Reiki, keeping the method as close to what is understood to be Mikao Usui's method. Who's right? Like anything, it depends on whom you ask. I believe these controversies, like all controversies, distract us more than clarify the essence of this energy. I personally do not print symbols out for anyone but my students, but more out of respect for the symbols and my teachers than a fear that one may learn something 'too soon.' Ten seconds on an internet search engine will find the symbols for you. The symbols, without attunement of your energy bodies, are of no use to you. Seeing them before taking Reiki will have no impact on your ability to facilitate healing, so if you choose to search the symbols, be my guest. As the Stiene's have written in "The Reiki Sourcebook," not exposing the Reiki symbols before a person is ready to use them keeps the symbols sacred and, as with anything kept secret, more powerful in the mind of the user. That makes sense to me, since the symbols are of no use anyway without attunement. Again, I have no problem with anyone else revealing the symbols though. When the symbols are used, verbally or mentally the name of the symbol is repeated 3 times in mantric fashion. This repetition is typical of Tendai Buddhism, but also serves a purpose in facilitating the healing power. The triple mantra helps move the energy from the spiritual to mental body, mental to emotional body, and from the emotional to the physical body. The symbols are drawn with the hands, feet, tongue at the roof of the mouth, with slight eye movement, and are utilized in various ways. The symbols may be drawn on or above a body part, a person, on a surrogate such as your own leg, a photo, a teddy bear, etc. The symbols can be used in one's immediate company, but also, since everything in made of energy, Reiki energy via the use of symbols, can be sent a long distance also. Power Symbol CKR, a symbol of shaman/Shinto derivation, amplifies the level of Reiki energy as if a light switch was just turned on. This amplifying symbol has the ability to clear negative energy effectively, and can be used on crystals, when buying or selling a house, or when you are in the presence of hostility of any kind. CKR power symbol is also a protection symbol. I use it on my car every single day. I have a story I tell my students about how I felt safely invisible to a very suspicious man when I was alone hiking one day. As you use Reiki more and more, the utilization of such an energy becomes so desirable to allow more rapid results. Mental/Emotional Symbol SHK helps the recipient to release the negativity stemming from unresolved emotional issues. This release requires recovery time for the typical person, but remember... Reiki can do no harm, so the release will be at a tolerable level, allowing true deep healing to occur. SHK can also be used to assist you with taking tests, finding lost items- as an aid to mental and emotional energies, you may tap into better cognitive skills by clearing the mental clouds. Distance Symbol HSZSN, also know as the Oneness symbol, erases the illusion of time and space, allowing the user to not only connect with the recipient, but be one with the recipient to facilitate healing at a distance. Using this symbol to open the door through time and/or space, one may send healing energy simply by creating an intention, by holding a photo of the recipient, using a doll or other surrogate as a substitute for the body of the recipient, and so on. There is room for plenty of creativity. Another very wonderful use of HSZSN is to heal yourself at different ages of you life or even past lives. Finding the root of your issues through this Oneness symbol, in conjunction with the other symbols, facilitates powerful healing. Master Symbol DKM, the most powerful of the Usui symbols, lights the way for all other symbols to work at the highest level. Once attuned to the master level with DKM, the ability to feel the energy flow through you, and to 'read' the energy of the recipient increases one thousandfold. Many people, with regular development of their Reiki practice, also tap more easily into their intuition or sixth sensory feeling once receiving the Master Symbol. The veil of illusion is further lifted, connecting the user to his or her highest spiritual Source (God, Goddess, Yahweh, Christ, Krishna, Mother), healing the separation that exists until we return to the Source. The Addition of Alternative Symbols Multiple branches of Reiki are responsible for additional symbols that are not directly connected to the original Usui Reiki system. Although a strict Usui practitioner will not use non-Usui symbols, those who have used them (including myself) have been able to experience different levels of energy and healing with them. Although they are called Reiki symbols (such as the Usui-Tibetan symbols), there is an argument against the label 'Reiki' since they are not associated with Usui's original teachings. Either way, a significant number of these newer symbols are in existence and are used by more and more Western Reiki practitioners to supplement their practice. Using these is an individual choice, but learning them may be requirements for classes and attunements through various Reiki branches. |

| Preparing & Clearing a room for Reiki: Using the power symbol and Master symbol are both fantastic for clearing a room. The power symbol charges and clears the energy in the space, while the Master symbol infuses light. Ritual for increasing vibration of energetic bodies and chakras: Using the power symbol at the meridians of the seven main chakras, pause at each chakra to experience the energy shift. Begin at the root chakra, working your way up to the crown, gently focus on the sense of energy as you work your way up. Let this create a meditative mood, allowing the sense of the energy shift develop into an energetic exchange with your surroundings, your loved ones, the Universe. Using the distance symbol is very helpful in contributing to this "oneness" practice. Healing your inner child: The distance symbol, which creates oneness and eliminates the illusions of time and space, connects you to the 'you' who may have suffered physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. Creating the oneness to a part of you who has suffered provides the base for then using the mental/emotional symbol to gently provide healing. Also using the Master symbol infuses the energy with pure love and light, more rapidly bringing you to healing and finally resolving the remaining issues that have been baggage for years. |
